How the measured tests work
The Player Development Score comes from a player's own answers, so it is self-reported. The tests on this page are measured. We keep the two apart and never mix them into one number.
Four ways a result is compared
- Your first result: the first time you record a test is your starting point.
- Your change since your first result: your latest result against your first, in the test's own unit. Only like for like: the same version of the test, measured the same way (for example hand-timed against hand-timed).
- Compared with Football Reach users: where your latest result sits among other Football Reach users of the same sex and age band who did the same test the same way, counting each player once. Shown only when at least 30 players are in the group, always with the number of players and the date. These are self-measured results from people who chose to use Football Reach: not a representative sample and not a norm.
- Compared with a published reference: a published study that says who was measured, how many, how and when. Shown only for the ages and sex the study covers. If the study measured the test differently from us, we say so.
We do not publish targets or pass marks of our own. Earlier versions of the plan showed physical "targets" for each age group that were not measured on any identified group of players; they have been removed.
The tests
Warm up fully first, with an adult there for anyone under 18. Use a flat, non-slip surface such as grass, a 3G pitch, a track or a sports hall, with room to slow down, never a road or pavement. Do the bleep test last or on another day, and do not test while injured or in pain.
30 m sprint
Measures: Speed. Recorded in: seconds (lower is better). Ages: 8 to 30. Version: 1, from 29 September 2026.
You need: A tape measure or measuring wheel, two cones, a stopwatch or phone timer, and someone to time you.
- Measure 30 m on a flat, non-slip surface (grass, a 3G pitch, a track or a sports hall) with room to slow down after the finish.
- Start standing, with your front foot just behind the start line. No run-up.
- The timer stands level with the finish line, starts the clock on your first movement and stops it as your chest crosses the line.
- Run three times with at least three minutes of rest in between. Record the fastest time, to two decimal places.
Hand timing and electronic timing gates give different times for the same run, so hand-timed results are only compared with hand-timed results, and gate times with gate times.

English academy boys, U9 (Radnor et al. 2021) (Male, ages 8)
Who was measured: Boys in the U9 age group of two English professional football academies, 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons (12 results), data from 2018-2020.
How: 30 m on a 3G pitch with electronic timing gates, best of three, starting in a split stance 50 cm behind the first gate. Starting behind the gate can give slightly faster times than a start on the line, so compare with care. Your results are compared only with results timed by electronic gates.

Standing broad jump
Measures: Lower-body power. Recorded in: centimetres (higher is better). Ages: 8 to 30. Version: 1, from 29 September 2026.
You need: A tape measure and a flat, non-slip surface.
- Stand with your toes just behind a line, feet about shoulder-width apart.
- Swing your arms and jump forwards as far as you can, taking off and landing on both feet at the same time.
- Measure from the line to the back of the heel nearest the line.
- Jump twice and record the longer jump, in centimetres. A jump where you fall or step back does not count.
Needs only a tape measure, so results from home, school and club are comparable when the landing rule is the same.

Countermovement jump
Measures: Lower-body power. Recorded in: centimetres (higher is better). Ages: 8 to 30. Version: 1, from 29 September 2026.
You need: A jump mat, or a phone app that works out jump height from slow-motion video. Optional: skip this test if you have neither.
- Keep your hands on your hips throughout.
- Stand tall, dip quickly to a comfortable depth and jump straight up as high as you can.
- Land on both feet in the same place, with your legs straight in the air.
- Jump three times with about a minute of rest. Record the highest, in centimetres.
Mats and apps work out height from time in the air, and different devices can give different numbers. Keep using the same one.

20 m shuttle run (bleep test)
Measures: Aerobic fitness (keeping going for a whole match). Recorded in: level and shuttle (higher is better). Ages: 8 to 30. Version: 1, from 29 September 2026.
You need: Two lines 20 m apart and the standard UK bleep test audio (20 m multistage fitness test).
- Use the UK version of the test: level 1 is run at 8.0 km/h, level 2 at 9.0 km/h, then each level is 0.5 km/h faster and lasts about a minute.
- Run between the lines, reaching each line by the beep, and turn.
- Stop when you miss the line on two beeps in a row, or when you choose to stop.
- Record the level and the shuttle within that level that you last completed.
Other versions of the test start at a different speed, so a level from another version is not the same level. Do this test last, or on another day.
No published reference is on file for this test yet, so results are compared only with your own earlier results and, once there are enough, with other Football Reach users.
Versions
If we change how a test is done, it becomes a new version and older results keep the version they were recorded with, so they are never compared with a differently measured result. Published references are never edited: a newer study is added alongside, and an old one is marked retired, so a past result is always read against the reference that applied on its date.
